Course Overview:
Wheelchair and Bed Positioning is a complex and growing area of needed specialization. There is very little training provided in professional education programs to teach competency in this area. In a time where reimbursement is limited and regulations are strict, “on the job training” through trial and error can be costly in many ways.
This course is designed to assist healthcare professionals, who work with individuals in need of a wheelchair, to evaluate, choose, document, and justify the medically necessary wheelchair prescription that will benefit their patient. This wheelchair and bed positioning seminar enables participants to improve their evaluation skills, facilitate decision making, and improve documentation skills. This course will enable participants to understand the value and need of proper wheelchair and bed positioning and the harmful effects that poor positioning can have on their patients. The participants will increase their knowledge of pressure ulcer staging and appropriate interventions for prevention and management from the rehabilitation professional’s perspective. The primary emphasis will be placed on identifying, evaluating, and understanding pelvic and spinal deformities to allow for the “treatment first, modification last” approach to positioning.
Positioning principles and problem-solving will be discussed with the wheelchair components and positioning supplies to facilitate understanding of their applications in positioning. Further focus will be placed on establishing medical necessity through skilled documentation to promote justification for reimbursement of services with emphasis on discharge planning principles for successful transition to nursing care.
